5-6 Year olds (Handbook One)

All of our 5 & 6 year olds are new to Guiding, and just beginning their journey.  They are fun, affectionate, eager, and fast learning.  At this age girls seem to absorb new information and new skills at record speeds.

The Turquoise and Topaz badges challenge girls to learn independence, develop basic Guiding skills, and start to give service at home, at school, and within their community.

Activities for this group often include craft, games, basic outdoor skills, sleepovers, singing, cooking, and giggling.  Each week they learn or develop a new skill, whether they realise it or not at the time.  To see what they're up to this term, click here.

7-8 Year olds (Handbook Two)

Our 7 and 8 year olds are enthusiastic, energetic girls, learning about themselves and the world around them.  They are realising that they have the power to set their own program, to make their own decisions, and to change the world around them.

The Amethyst and Garnet badges challenge girls to develop their skills, give service within their home and community, care for their world, and experience new situations.

After they turn seven, girls are able to work on the Junior Baden Powell Award.  This Peak Achievement is the highest award that girls of this age can attempt, and takes about a year to complete.  It covers all of the Fundamentals of Guiding, including Promise & Law, Outdoors, Guiding Traditions, World Guiding, Service, and Patrol System.

Activities for this group often include games, learning new practical skills, getting to know people in the community, singing, and learning about life.  To see what they have planned for this term, click here.

9-11 Year olds (Handbook Three)

Our 9 to 11 year olds are growing up fast!  This is a time of huge change for them as they discover their place in the world, and what they can do to create a better community for themselves and others.

The Agate, Zircon and Jade badges challenge them to learn about themselves and their community, grow new skills, develop confidence, and care for their world.

After they turn ten girls are able to start work on the Baden Powell Award. This Peak Achievement is the highest award that girls of this age can attempt, and takes about a year to complete.  It covers all of the Fundamentals of Guiding, including Promise & Law, Outdoors, Guiding Traditions, World Guiding, Leadership, Service, and Patrol System.

Activities for this group often include planning their own camps and activities, running fundraisers, researching issues that affect them, and cooking up a storm in the kitchen or over the campfire.  To see what their adventures are this term, click here.

Our Groups

Mount Barker Girl Guides caters for girls aged 5 to 17, and women aged 18 and over.  Each age group has its own program, which is decided on by the girls in the group.  Read on to learn more about what we do.

12-13 Year olds (Handbook Four)

Our 12 and 13 year olds are confident and outgoing, and able to meet all manner of challenges that face them.  They are able to work independently, and often choose to follow their own pursuits.

The Sapphire and Diamond challenges encourage them to create resources, work with younger Guides, network with other units, give service in their community, and pursue their personal interests.

Activities for this group are varied, and take the girls in many directions: indoors and out, personal and community, skills and service.  To see what they are working on this term, click here.

14-17 Year olds (Handbook Five)

Our 14 to 17 year olds are ambitious, skilled, capable, confident leaders.  Any one of them can be called upon to help out at a moment's notice, whether it's planning an event, running an activity, putting up a tent, providing first aid, or giving service in any other way.  Their experience in Guiding and in life means that they are capable of many different things.

The Black Opal badge challenges them to expand their horizons in all directions.

Girls in this group can start work on the Queen's Guide Award.

Activities for this group can include things like camping independently, helping in the community, following personal interests, developing leadership, pamper nights, hot chocolate, and more.  To see what they have planned for this term, click here.

18-30 Year olds (Young Leaders/Olave)

Our Young Leaders can often be our busiest members.  As Guides they have graduated from being a Youth member to an Adult member, taken on new Leadership roles, learned many  new skills, and gained new qualifications.  In life they are pursuing further education, developing relationships, having families, and establishing themselves in careers.  There is always something going on to keep them busy.

These young women can be part of the Olave program, especially for Leaders under 30, which gives them a peer group and fun activities while supporting them in their Guiding careers.  They can pursue the Olave Baden Powell Award - a challenge which takes between two and six years to complete.

All Leaders 18+

Our Leaders are all different.  They are a group made up of women dedicated to Guiding, and being involved in a number of different ways.

We have Qualified Unit Leaders, Unit Leaders, Unit Helpers and Resource Leaders, who all contribute to the program and activities of our various age groups.  At the same time they attend training days of their own, developing their skills and capabilities in all areas of Guiding.  They have special skills including First Aid, Outdoors, Kayaking, Child Development, and more.

All of our Leaders are volunteers, spending an average of ten hours every week working to ensure that we provide the best possible program for our girls.  At the same time they manage their homes, families, careers, and other service commitments.  They're a busy lot, always working to make the world a little bit better.
